At least two vehicles were torched during disturbances in the area.

Both the Mayor and local Sinn Féin councillor Aileen Mellon have called for those engaging in anti-social behaviour to stop now.

Mayor Tierney said: “I was on the ground in the area for most of the night following calls from distressed residents.

“What happened in the Galliagh area is not what residents want or need. It was totally unacceptable and only hurts the people of Galliagh.

“I have been working with a number of different groups over recent weeks to address the anti social issues in the area and what happened last night took things to a new level.

“Due to the activity in the area large crowds came to watch on which didn’t help matters.

“We are still in the middle of a pandemic and large crowds on the streets is irresponsible and unnecessary.

“I would appeal to those involved in the anti social behaviour last night to stop and allow the people of Galliagh to live in peace and also to those who came to watch to stay at home."

Sinn Féin Councillor Aileen Mellon said: “We have seen yet another night of trouble in Galliagh tonight and more vehicles hijacked and burned.

“It’s an absolute disgrace that people are being terrorised and do not feel safe in their own community.

“I am appealing for calm in the area tonight and I call on those responsible to stop this reckless behaviour and get off the community’s back.

“My thoughts are with those impacted by these attacks and the people of Galliagh who are crying out for this activity to stop.

“Galliagh is a proud community and will not be dragged down by the actions of a minority who are hell-bent on destruction.”

Prior to the vehicles being set on fire a suspicious object was discovered at the Skeoge Road near Galliagh Park.

It was declared an elaborate hoax after it was examined by Ammunition Technical Officers.

However, the PSNI were attacked with petrol bombs and paint bombs while dealing with the incident.
