Car crime and burglary accused granted bail

Ryan McGlinchey, of Benview Estate, faces a total of nine charges including burglary, arson, criminal damage and dangerous driving.

The offences relate to an alleged incident on February 29.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard allegations that police received a report that McGlinchey had broken a window in a property with a can.

The house was allegedly owned by a sister of McGlinchey’s girlfriend.

On the same night, there was a so-called creeper burglary in Eglinton and a black jeep was stolen.

The following day police received a report of a similar vehicle performing a three point turn in the Cornshell Fields area.

A short time later the jeep was found on fire in another area of the city.

The defendant and his co-accused were said to have been in the area.

Opposing bail, an investigating officer said McGlinchey has 19 previous convictions.

She added the defendant had only been released from prison in November last year after serving a sentence for ramming a police car and injuring officers.

The officer also revealed there was a crime spree around the same time which is still under investigation by police.

This includes four burglaries and 15 were broken into.

District Judge Barney McElholm granted bail, however he warned McGlinchey if he stepped out of line he would find himself back in prison.

The 22-year-old was released on his own bail of £1,000, with one surety of £750. He must abide by a curfew, wear an electronic tag and is banned from entering Eglinton.

He will appear in court again on September 8.
