Device which led to evacuations ‘an elaborate hoax’

A suspicious object which sparked a security alert and major disruption in Derry earlier today has been declared an elaborate hoax.

Pupils and staff from St. Columb’s College, and residents living nearby were forced to leave the area after the discovery a suspicious object in the Buncrana Road/ Collon Lane area.

The college was evacuated just hours after pupils arrived for their first day back at school in a fortnight after the usual week-long October break was extended to two weeks.

Parents were contacted directly to collect their children and buses were arranged to take some students into the city centre.

Residents living in Slievemore were evacuated a short time later as cordons were erected across the area, and Templemore Sports Complex was opened as a rest centre for those residents who needed it. All residents havew now been given clearance to return to their homes.

Police confirmed that the suspicious device discovered was examined by ATO and declared an elaborate hoax.

Inspector Vince Redmond said: “I understand the disruption this incident caused for local residents who had to leave their homes as our officers worked to make the area safe.

“I want to thank the local community for their understanding and patience.”

He added: “Those involved showed a complete disregard to public safety and the education and welfare of those pupils impacted.

“I would appeal to anyone with information about this incident to call us on 101, and quote reference number 330 02/11/20. Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan hit out at those who left the hoax device.

Speaking as the school was evacuated this morning, the Foyle representative said: “This is disgraceful and the last thing that pupils, teachers and parents need this morning, particularly as children return to the first day back after the break.

“Those behind this alert have no regard for the consequences that their actions have for the rest of us.”
