The police confirmed the benzodiazepines were confiscated on Monday.

Officers from the force's Ballyarnett Neighbourhood Team said they believed the drugs, which can lead to dependence among users, were going to be peddled locally.

It was important they were taken off the streets, police stated.

"They were bagged up and ready to be sold to people in our community. We’ve seen first hand the suffering and misery caused by drug dealing.

"Drug dealers don’t care, we do," said the PSNI.

Just last week the PSNI engaged with residents in Derry around its Silent Guardian initiative after concerns were raised about drug dealing.

Leaflets were distributed providing information and guidance on reporting suspected criminality.

The locations of the bins in Derry are: Ballymagroarty Community Centre, Bishop Street Community Centre, HURT Office, Derry, Northside Village Centre, Old Library Trust, Shantallow Community Residents Association, Simon Community NI, Tesco’s Lisnagelvin and The Gasyard Centre.
