District Judge Ted Magill made the comment as he refused to grant 28-year-old Ruairi James Canning bail at Derry Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Canning, of Lisfannon Park, faces a total of 22 charges relating to an alleged incident on June 3. They include, driving whilst unfit, driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving and assaulting police.

The court heard allegations that Canning was driving a vehicle which swerved into and collided with police cars on three occasions.

It is further alleged he drove at speed and did hand brake turns in the Brandywell area.

When the vehicle was finally stopped, it is alleged Canning lashed out at police and caused minor injuries to officers. He was also allegedly found in possession of cannabis.

Opposing bail, an investigating officer said the 28-year-old has been banned from driving for ten years, but continues to get behind the wheel. He said that police have concerns Canning will commit further offences and pose a ‘danger to life’ if he continues to drive.

A defence barrister said that the case would face a lengthy delay as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and his client could be released with stringent conditions.

Judge Magill said ‘this man is just going to keep driving’ and refused the application.

Canning will appear again on July 2.
