The Derry Councillor was speaking after being contacted by residents who, she said, were furious at the amount of rubbish that has been dumped on the Glassagh Road in recent days.

“Anyone who goes to the area will be shocked to see the amount of stuff dumped at the side of the road,” Colr. Burke said. “And then someone has gone and set it on fire. This rubbish must have been transported to the area as it included a fridge freezer.

“I would appeal to people to desist from this practice immediately and have a bit of respect for the local community and the environment particularly during this coronavirus pandemic. Creggan is not a dumping ground and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated”.

The problem of people dumping large waste materials has been ongoing in the Creggan hinterland area for years. There have also been fears that illegal dumping could increase after recycling centres were closed last week along with all other non-essential facilities.

Mayor Michaela Boyle has appealed to the public to be responsible after rubbish was dumped outside the recycling centre at Glendermott Road following the closures. “Remember that it’s an offence to dump indiscriminately and this is punishable by a Fixed Penalty Notice of a fine imposed by the Courts.”
