A man is in police custody after being arrested following a spate of car crime that culminated in the robbery in Bligh’s Lane on Thursday morning.

A car stolen from outside a home in Galliagh shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday collided with another vehicle on the Buncrana Road before being used in the robbery.

Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan said: “This is shocking for everyone caught up in these incidents. My thoughts are with the post office worker and the car owners caught up in this serious criminality.”

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan asked: “How dare these faceless cowards attack and threaten hard working public servants? Stealing parcels paid for and delaying post on its way to the people of Creggan, many of whom where awaiting the delivery of children’s Christmas gifts.”

Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership and Creggan Enterprises said: “It is clear from direct community engagement that this was not a politically-motivated incident. This was a cowardly and criminal act which not only causes further anxiety and stress for postal workers who have worked ceaselessly throughout the pandemic - but also impacts negatively on families and individuals in the area who await vital communications and supplies at this time.”

The PSNI said two men stole a silver Fiesta from the Clon Elagh area shortly before 8.45am yesterday.

A PSNI spokesperson stated: “A few minutes after it was stolen it was reported this car collided with another vehicle on Buncrana Road before making off. It is then believed that around 9.25am two men driving a silver Fiesta approached the driver of the postal van in the Bligh’s Lane area and threatened him before removing parcels and making off towards the Bogside.”

The car was abandoned in Miller Street after an attempt was made to burn it.
