Derry Magistrate’s Court heard police on patrol in Foyleside Shopping Centre were informed that a man was acting suspiciously in Boots Chemists.

Officers searched Stokes but nothing was found.

The following day, CCTV was checked and staff reported that the 19-years-old had stolen four bottles of aftershave by placing them in a large bag.

During police interview, the defendant said he had been on a ‘lot of tablets’ and couldn’t remember what he had done with the aftershave after the left the shop.

The court heard the items, worth £235, have never been recovered.

Defence solicitor, Mr. Seamus Quigley said his client had an ‘appalling record’ and received a suspended sentence for a similar offence in January.

Suspending a four month sentence for 18 months, Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers also ordered Stokes to pay £235 compensation to Boots Chemists.
