Derry Christmas Jumper World Record launched

The Mayor and Bishops Good and McKeown joined by representatives from the charities.

The city is now poised to host a new Guinness World Record bid on Sunday, December 18, at Waterloo Place with thousands expected to take part in festive tops.

The event is being arranged to raise money for Foyle Hospice, Children In Crossfire, Concern Worldwide, the Mayor’s Charity and Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Catholic Bishop of Derry Donal McKeown and Church of Ireland Bishop Ken Good said the event was a great way of showcasing Derry’s generosity and sense of fun.

Mayor of Derry Hilary McClintock urged everyone to turn out on the day: “It’s a great event just before Christmas to bring people together from all sections of the community and to have fun as well as supporting local charities as well.”

Sarah Egan from Concern Worldwide, said: “We all Christmas jumpers hanging in our wardrobe so bring them out and the more colourful and festive the better.”

Richard Moore from Children In Crossfire meanwhile said: “It’s an event the whole family can join in and have a bit of craic with. Also at Christmas it’s nice to think about other people.”

Ciaran McGinley from the Foyle Hospice added: “I think it will be very special. This will follow up on the 10,001 Santa’s attempt a few years back and we would be absolutely delighted if we got anywhere near the numbers that turned out at that event.”
