Celebrating her 100th birthday this week is Mrs. Adelaide (Ada) I.B.L. Foxlee of Aghanloo House, Bellarena.

The daughter of the late Mr. W.E. Hart of Kilderry, Muff, and Mrs. Bessie Louise Hart, daughter of Dr. G.J. Allman, Professor of Maths at Galway University. She was born at Falmore House, Gleneely, on November 25, 1892. She was first trained as a horticulturist in Dublin and later as a nurse at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. Amongst other appointments she served as a nurse at the British American Hospital in Madrid and was there during the early days of the Spanish Civil War.

13 All-Star nominations

Donegal , the county, which won so many hearts, plus one Sam Maguire in September with their sheer grit performances this year, have been recognised for their endeavours with the news this week that they received 13 of the 42 nominations for the Bank of Ireland All-Stars.

The 13 Tír Conaill men bidding for an All-Star place in Donegal’s most memorable year for G.A.A. football are Gary Walsh, Martin Gavigan, Matt Gallagher, Noel Hegarty, Donal Reid, Martin Shovlin, Anthony Molloy, Brian Murray, Declan Bonner, Tony Boyle, Manus Boyle, James McHugh and Martin McHugh.

640 jobs at risk

Donegal’s ongoing potato crisis has put 640 jobs at risk with further job losses in spin-off industries forecast if the potato business goes to the wall.

The crisis, which has seen up to 60 per cent of the potato crop still in the ground in some areas, with only four weeks of the year remaining, has left Donegal’s potato growers facing financial ruin and has threatened the potato industry in the whole of the country. Neil McBride of Donegal Potatoes Limited in Newtowncunningham, who is chair of the Donegal potato crisis committee, said people did not realise how serious the crisis really is.
