Derry's Jack McCann nominated for musical theatre award

A Derry man, who won rave reviews for his role in a lauded London musical, has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Jack McCann recently took on the lead role in ‘The Sins of Jack Saul’, which depicted the life of the most notorious male prostitute in Victorian London.

Staged in the award-winning ‘Above the Stag’ theatre, it was extremely well-received by both audiences and critics alike.

Jack has now been nominated in the 2016 Broadway World UK/ West End awards in the ‘Best Actor in a New Production of a Musical’ category.

Speaking to the ‘Journal,’ Jack said the nomination - the winner of which is decided by a public vote - was “a lovely surprise”.

He said: “I honestly wasn’t expecting it. A lot of the other actors in the category were involved in the West End shows which had really long runs. (Other nominees include Lee Mead - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Darius Campbell, Funny Girl.)

“We were a smaller scale production and you never, ever assume. But it’s nice that people acknowledge the play and everyone involved in it.”

Jack moved from Derry to train at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, from where he’ll soon be graduating with a first class honours degree in musical theatre.

He has appeared in numerous productions, including as Val LaMar in a revival of the classic musical comedy ‘Babes in Arms’ and has a number of exciting projects in the pipeline for 2017. If you’d like to vote for Jack, visit www.broadwayworld.com
