Thomas Gallagher from Galliagh Park who suffers from cerebral palsy said his Peugeot jeep type car has been written off following the fire which was started just before midnight on Sunday night.

He’s now appealing for anyone who may have seen a burgundy coloured car seen fleeing the scene to contact police.

“I’ve been living here for eight years with no bother,” he told the ‘Journal.’ “On Sunday night I was in my bed when my sister came running in shouting that the car was on fire. “

He revealed that the car was alight right outside his bungalow in Galliagh Park.

“The gas box is right outside my front door so this could have been so much worse,” he said. “It could’ve gone up in smoke.”

He said the car, which he described as his “lifeline,” is so badly damaged, it has been written off.

“I rely on the car for work and my work as a volunteer with young people,” he said. “I have no idea why this happened. Police are investigating.”
