Durkan calls for more work on ovarian cancer awareness

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has tabled a parliamentary motion at Westminster supporting Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Mr. Durkan has also now formally called on the British Government and devolved administrations to act to ensure that all women know the symptoms of ovarian cancer and that more women are diagnosed early.

Mr. Durkan, who is vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer at Westminster, said: “This month provides us with a great opportunity to show our solidarity with over 7,000 women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer across the UK every year.

“It also provides us with an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of so many charities who are helping to raise awareness of this deadly disease – including the Pink Ladies in Derry, Target Ovarian Cancer and the sterling campaign which was led by Una Crudden.

“Una’s strength of character was never weakened by her illness – and with energy and inspiration she fought for so many others.

“I am deeply concerned that just one in five women are able to name the lead symptom of ovarian cancer – bloating.

“Indeed, the four key symptoms are persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, feeling full and a loss of appetite and increased urinary urgency or frequency.

“Importantly, early diagnosis of ovarian cancer saves lives – and awareness of the symptoms is key if more women are to be diagnosed sooner.”
