Elderly woman has handbag nicked from trolley while shopping in Tesco

The woman, who is in her 80s, was shopping in Tesco, Lisnagelvin on Sunday and her handbag was snatched when she turned her back in the fruit and vegetable aisle.

Her son explained that his mother does her shopping in Lisnagelvin every Sunday and is picked up and collected by one of her sons.

“She just turned around to get some bananas and when she turned back her bag was gone,” he said.

“She had around £120 cash in her bag, her buss pass and some store cards.

“Mum now has to wait two weeks to get a new bus pass so using the bus had been taken away from her.”

He said that a lot of elderly people regularly use Tesco in Lisnagelvin who are more vulnerable and trustworthy.

“We just want to let people out there know that this has happened,” he said. “To raise awareness.”

“Police did come and take a statement. They checked CCTV in Lisnagelvin but unfortunately the cameras are not pointed at the fruit and vegetable department.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: Police are investigating a report that a handbag was stolen from a shopper’s trolley at a Lisnagelvin supermarket on Sunday afternoon (17th).

“The woman was in the premises at about 3.45pm and was picking up bananas in the fruit and vegetable aisle. “Her handbag was in her trolley, and when she turned back to it, noticed the bag had been stolen.

“The bag contained her bus pass, bank cards and cash. At this stage, the handbag has not been recovered and no arrests have been made.”
