Arsonists set city centre green beside Derry Walls on fire

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has appealed for those setting fire to the grass area below the historic Derry Walls overlooking Fahan Street to stop.

She made her appeal after a large area of green space there was set on fire in Wednesday night and was attended by the Fire Service.

The Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene during the evening after the alarm was raised by local people.

Councillor Logue said: “I would appeal to whoever was behind this to stop. This is one of the few large green spaces in the area and the last thing we need is for this type of environmental vandalism to be taking place.

“It is one of the areas local residents can go for a walk during the coronavirus pandemic and are able to be social distancing.

“We also do not want to be putting pressure on our emergency services particularly in the current circumstances.”
