Bishop Street traffic and parking concerns

Residents of the Bishop Street area have complained about traffic flow and parking problems in the vicinity of a new housing construction project at the old Nazareth House.

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan has requested a meeting with Choice Housing, the housing association which is currently refurbishing the Grade B2 Listed Building and developing houses and apartments.

“In the past few days Councillor Patricia Logue and I have been contacted by residents in the Bishop Street area with a number of complaints in relation to residents parking ,the flow of traffic and state of the roadway due to ongoing building work at the former Nazareth House site.

“We knew when this work was to start in earnest that there would be problems due to the scale of this project and ongoing issues with traffic in this area which has been very well published in recent years. And we have held meetings with the Housing Association behind this project to try resolve issues presented to us in the past,” said Ms. Mullan.

She said she hopes to arrange an urgent meeting with the developers, the Housing Association and the residents to try to ‘get these problems ironed out as a matter of urgency’.

“Patricia and I met Choice housing and the contractor the week before Christmas, and represented issues facing residents.

“They agreed to carry out a clean-up and took onboard the concerns with a view to reduce the impact on residents.”

Ms. Mullan said it was very disappointing that residents were still faced with problems in the area.

The ‘Journal’ asked Choice Housing for its response to Ms. Mullan’s comments but at the time of going to Press the paper had yet to receive a statement.

However, the housing association has worked with the local representatives in the past and addressed residents’ concerns about the site prior to the Christmas holiday period.
