Bogside roundabouts get fresh lick of paint

Two button roundabouts at a busy junction linking Creggan, the Bogside and city centre that had been largely worn away have been repainted.

The Department of Infrastructure have applied a fresh lick of paint to the roundabouts at the meeting of Eastway, Elmwood Terrace, Westland Street and Laburnum Terrace,

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has welcomed the news that DfI’s highway maintenance team has now carried out urgent repairs at the painted minor roundabouts.

Colr. Logue recenlty complained that some motorists had been driving right over the top of them due to their badly dilapidated and partly visible state.

She said her party has been undertaking an ongoing road safety campaign in the Bogside and Brandywell for the last ten years.

Colr. Logue said: “Just a number of weeks ago I called on DRD Road Service to immediately upgrade the road markings at the mini roundabouts at the junction of Elmwood Terrace/Westland Street and Laburnum Terrace.

“I have now been contacted by local residents who are very pleased at the news this work has been carried out on the roundabouts and with new road demarcations also taking place.”

The Moor District Electoral Area (DEA) councillor said it would make the thoroughfare safer for both local pedestrians and motorists.

“This is great news as there were serious concerns that the markings on the roadway are badly worn away and many drivers simply don’t see the roundabouts and are driving straight through the junctions.”

She thanked DfI Roads division for promptly acting on local concerns and asked motorists traversing the junction to reduce their speed.

“I would like to thank DRD Road Service for their quick response.

“And once again I would make an urgent appeal to drivers who are merging onto these roundabouts to adhere to the speed limit,” stated Colr. Logue.
