Cars ‘driving straightthrough’ roundabout

Two button roundabouts at a junction linking Creggan, the Bogside and city centre, have been badly worn away and some motorists are driving right over the top of them.

That’s according to Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue who has been contacted by local residents concerned about safety at the junction at the bottom of Eastway.

Colr. Logue said residents of Elmwood Terrace, Westland Street and Laburnum Terrace, which converge at the roundabouts, have reported several near misses due to the dilapidated state of the road markings.

“I have been contacted by local residents and motorists concerned that the markings on the roadway are badly worn away and many drivers simply don’t see the roundabouts and are driving straight through the junctions.

“You only have to stand at the junction for a few minutes to see the number of near misses. It’s amazing the amount of vehicles that actually travelled through it - be that cars, vans, buses and lorries,” she said.

The Sinn Féin Councillor said motorists should slow down while passing through the area.

She also encouraged pedestrians crossing at the bottom of Eastway and the top of Westland Street to take care.

“This is a very dangerous junction coupled with the fact that some drivers are merging onto these roundabouts in excess of the speed limit.

“I would appeal for motorists to take due care and attention whilst travelling through the area.”

Colr. Logue, who has been campaigning for better road safety in the Moor District Electoral Area (DEA) for several years, said she hoped the roundabouts and road markings would be upgraded.

She said she would be writing to the Department of Infrastructure’s (DfI) Roads Division to raise the issue.
