The video was recorded at the Foodbank in Springtown Industrial Estate, and showcases the real commitment and dedication of volunteers and staff. It also features drone footage displaying the scenic landscape of Derry.

Among those involved in its production were Vinny Cunningham, Billy Gallagher, Tony Carlin, Jim Walker and Patrick Mahon.

Speaking about the new video, James McMenamin, manager at the Foodbank said: “I’d like to thank Joe and his team for doing the video. Also, a massive thank you to our all our volunteers. The work they’ve put in; it has been tireless. We couldn’t do it without them. Without the generosity and support of the public and businesses alike, we couldn’t serve the people that we do.”

Donations for the Foodbank are submitted by the public and businesses around the city. There are three collection points on the Strand Road and Tesco, Wheelers and Sainsbury’s are all open to donations. You can also donate food to Eurospar in Rathmore, Creggan. People can also bring what they have directly to the centre in Springtown Industrial Estate.

Mr McMenamin says this is “gratefully appreciated, as it goes out to those most in need”.

“We have the capacity to open more if needed. We are looking at extra hours at the minute to see what is needed and when it’s needed. If the need develops, we will open more.” he said.

January was a busy month for the Foodbank. So far this year, they’ve given out just under 14 tonnes of food to people in the community who are struggling.

Tinned goods and packet based products are the most popular and sought after donations. Fresh food and frozen food is not accepted as they cannot be maintained or refrigerated.

“We’ve seen the genuine need for the service increase. Realistically, there are people on their knees,” Mr McMenamin said. “There are people who are working, now on furlough. They are maybe down 20% of least of their wages.”

Although the Foodbank is open three days a week, people can still donate at its Springtown base daily between 9am-5pm via the collection bins provided. The centre at Springtown is open on Mondays 11am-3pm, Wednesdays 11am -3pm and 6pm-8pm, and on Fridays 11am-3pm.
