Handrail to be installed at busy Creggan pathway

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has welcomed news that work to install a handrail is to take place at one of the busiest pathways in Creggan.

The rail is to be erected on the thoroughfare that links Demesne Avenue and Eastway with the New Road. It is heavily utilised by local residents and people making their way through the area to schools, shops, the cemetery and the town.

Councillor Logue, who represents the Moor District Electoral Area (DEA) said: “I have received confirmation from the Housing Executive (H.E) that work is to take place on this pathway early in the New Year. They have said that they will now install a new safety handrail.

“The pathway which goes from Demesne Avenue down onto Eastway /New Road is one of the busiest in the area.”

The establishment of the new safety measure will make it easier for older people to navigate the path which can become slippy underfoot when the weather is inclement.

Colr. Logue said: “The Creggan community have highlighted safety concerns regarding this walkway. It has a very steep gradient leading to a very busy roadway. This walkway is also used regularly by shoppers and school children going to the local shopping centre and schools. It can be particularly hazardous when slippery. I will continue to endeavour to try to also get a number of lights on the path and will keep residents informed if there is a positive outcome to my requests.”
