Mellon welcomes discussions on Galliagh bonfire issue

Sinn Féin Councillors Aileen Mellon and Sandra Duffy have written to various agencies urging them to respond to concerns surrounding bonfires in Galliagh. The local Councillors said they have been liaising with residents of Galliagh Park over a number of weeks concerning the issue of bonfires and the anti-community activities that accompany them.

Councillor Mellon said they were responding to concern, anger and frustration from residents of Galliagh Park area regarding ongoing incidents involving a bonfire site, including fly-tipping.

“We have requested the PSNI to act on this as a matter of urgency as an when they arise. There are a number of vehicles that PSNI are aware of and are following up to identify those responsible for this total disregard for our community.

“Speaking to the young people we recognise their frustration also but many of them accept that they need to find other less disruptive ways to engage themselves. Residents’ main issue is that not only do they have to put up with an unwanted bonfire on the 15th of August but also have to endure three months of nightly fires, underage drinking, fireworks and death driving associated with this annual occurrence.

“Sandra and I have written to both the Housing Executive and Council asking for action in response to residents’ concerns.”

This week saw vandalism and “unacceptable threats” in the area, Colr. Mellon said, adding: “We would like to thank the community workers for their quick response in removing it.

“We will continue to work with residents and support them as they continue to fight for action and the right to live peacefully in their homes.

“I call on all parents to impress on their young people the need to show respect to their neighbours and to realise that this activity is irresponsible, unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

“It is especially important that young people realise the present dangers in gathering in large numbers. We are still in the middle of a serious health crisis and as recent public health reports have confirmed, this pandemic is no respecter of age. Whether young old or in between, we cannot be complacent by encouraging people to gather in large crowds, risking bringing Covid 19 into our homes and threatening the health and wellbeing of your families, particularly our elderly and vulnerable relatives.

“We have done so well in keeping the numbers down so let’s not do anything to prolong this unsociable lockdown.”
