Thus said SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan after the Department of Infrastructure repaired the vandalised street lighting in the Chapel Lane.

"The vandalism of these lampposts which occurred last year, including a number outside Creggan shops, must not and cannot be tolerated.

“The stumps left behind had exposed wires posing potential safety risks to residents, particularly children who frequent both areas. This inconsiderate stupidity only serves to disadvantage those within the community," he said.

The street infrastructure was vandalised last year.

“I initially raised this repair with the department last June, at which point I was advised that due to budgetary constraints maintenance could not be carried out. I am grateful, that having consistently raised the need for repairs that the Department have finally replaced the column on Chapel Lane.

“These are essential streetlights in a heavily utilised area of Creggan and their replacement while a comparatively small issue will make a significant difference to residents who use this popular walkway," said Mr. Durkan.
