Residents struggle to access homes due to the extent of surface flooding in the Brandywell

Residents in the Brandywell have urged the authorities to examine gullies in the area after flooding made it difficult for some of them to access their homes.

A number of streets at the southern end of the Brandywell were badly affected during heavy rainfall.

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue said: “I was contacted by a number of residents concerned about flooding on the main Foyle Road between Glendara and Coshowen and the area around Anne Street.

“It made it difficult for residents to access their homes, vehicles and caused problems for motorists on the busy Foyle Road which is a main arterial route through our city.

Surface flooding has long been a problem in the Lecky Road, Foyle Road and Brandywell areas, said Colr. Logue.

“This area suffers repeatedly during heavy rainfall and clearly it is an issue that needs addressed. I have been in contact with Transport NI to ensure that all the gullies in the area are cleared as a matter of urgency. The last thing we want to see is flooding getting into local homes, cars or a road accident being caused.”
