A car had its wing mirrors clipped when a refuse bin rolled down a hill in the area this week.

Sinn Féin councillor Patricia Logue has urged people to make sure their wheelie bins are secured after collection.

Councillor Logue said: “In stormy weather empty wheelie bins blow over or roll if someone pushes them accidentally or deliberately and this could cause serious injury or an accident. Cars have been damaged by wheelie bins rolling down steep hills and it is lucky no one has been injured to date.”

She said vigilance is particularly necessary on the sloping streets off the Elmwood Terrace section of the Lone Moor Road.

“If a rolling wheelie bin was to hit a child or an older person then they could be seriously hurt. I would ask people to make sure their wheelie bins are secured after they are emptied and I would also ask the bin collectors to try to ensure bins are not left where they can roll away, particularly on hilly streets.”
