With Derry holidays approaching Benone beach has capacity for 93,333 socially distanced sunbathers, analysis shows

With the traditional Derry holidays almost upon us and international travel discouraged due to COVID-19 a new study has shown that Benone beach has the capacity to accommodate 93,333 socially distanced people.

While such a large congregation of people on the popular north Derry beauty spot is unlikely it is at least possible, according to an analysis by Katie Tener of the Northern Ireland Assembly Research and Information Service (RaISe).

Using mapping software Ms. Tener calculated that Benone - including Downhill - could almost accommodate the entire population of Derry in socially distant 'bubbles' making it the second most capacious beach analysed in the north.

Only Murlough beach, stretching from Dundrum Bay to Newcastle, could safely handle more seaside visitors, 184,430, according to the research.

"With many international travel restrictions still in place, more people than ever will be opting for ‘staycations’ in Northern Ireland. This article provides the results of a spatial analysis looking at whether social distancing is possible on some of our most popular beaches.

"The results were calculated using a mapping software and creating socially distant bubbles across the area of the beach. Each bubble has a 1m radius and is designed to house one individual.

"A two metre space between each bubble was also incorporated into the analysis to allow for freedom of movement as people navigate between sea and shore, towel and ice-cream. The method was taken from a recent ESRI UK analysis on British beaches," stated Ms. Tener.

RaISe provided graphic illustrations of social distancing capacity at West Strand in Portrush (4797 people) and at Murlough (184,430).

"With most beaches now open to the public, the NI Executive encourages people to enjoy their natural surroundings but to adhere to social distancing and continue to practice good hand hygiene. They ask you to choose quiet locations, quiet times, to keep roads clear for locals and emergency services and to take your litter home with you. For more information please visit NI Direct," stated Ms. Tener.

Ten beaches in total were subject to analysis.

The results were as follows: Portstewart (29,310); Benone, including Downhill (93,333); Murlough (184,430); Portrush West Strand (4,797); Whiterocks (8,034); Castlerock (11,929); Ballycastle (3,718); Helen’s Bay (1,349); Tyrella (69,157); and Cranfield (2,511).
