Euro 2016: Big screen plan for Limavady rejected

Both the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland squad have qualified for Euro 2016 in France.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council considered the erection of large screens in four towns throughout the Borough council area - Limavady, Coleraine, Ballycastle and Ballymoney.

The idea was first suggested in November, but concerns were expressed about the potential cost of the proposal.

The decision not to go ahead with the plan was reached at a meeting of the corporate policy and resources committee on Tuesday.

Committee member, Sinn Fein councillor Brenda Chivers welcomed the decision.

“I pointed out when this first came up that it would have a negative impact on local businesses, and that the council should be trying to help struggling local businesses rather that taking customers away from them,” said Colr. Chivers.

“The total cost for the four screens would be between £65,537.67 to £94,897.92 for the full tournament, I feel this would be an unnecessary burden on the ratepayer for a temporary installation.

“This money would be put to far better use as a permanent play park for example.”

Colr. Chivers added: “If these screens were to go ahead who is to say people would even make use of them as they would be very dependent on good weather to bring crowds to an outdoor event such as this.

“We don’t want to spoil anyone’s enjoyment of this historic tournament, as the whole island is represented at this major tournament, but as elected representatives we must ensure the ratepayers get the best value for money possible.”
