Fairtrade Fortnight celebration across Derry & Inishowen

A banana farmer from South America will meet students from schools in Derry this week as part of a programme of Fairtrade Fortnight events across Derry and Inishowen.

Maria Genoa from the Dominican Republic will address Thornhill College students, who are striving to achieve Fair Trade School status, in Derry this Friday.

Immediately after this she will also attend workshops with students from four schools on both sides of the Derry-Donegal border at the Eden Arts Centre, Pilot’s Row in the Bogside.

Prior to that, today (Tuesday) will see a ‘Big Clothes Swap’ hosted by Zero Waste North West and Foyle Fairtrade, from 5pm to 8pm at the Eden Place Arts Centre, Pilot’s Row.

Friday night will see Cafe Soul on Shipquay Street host a second birthday bash to marks Derry’s anniversary as a Fair Trade City. Music at the ‘Bring Your Own’ event will come from Inishowen’s The Henry Girls, as well as Colm Herron, Encore Contemporary Choir and Twos Harmony. Entry is free or by donation and the event runs from 8pm till late.

Saturday will see the launch of the Carndonagh Big Breakfast from 11.00 am to 12.30 p.m. at the Colgan Hall in the town, with Maria Genao attending.
