Fire at Derry primary school '˜suspicious' say Fire Service

The fire is thought to have begun at Holy Child Primary School in Creggan at approximately 9pm and when the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service arrived the roof of the premises was alight.

Fire Service district commander Kevin Lynch said fire crews were called to the scene shortly after 21:00 BST.

“When we arrived, building materials on the roof had been set alight,” he said.

“The quick action of the fire service meant we were able to extinguish the fire before it got a chance to get into the structure of the building. “

Four appliances from Crescent Link and Northland Fire Station attended the scene.

The fire was brought under control shortly before midnight.

A statement on the school’s facebook page said: “Many of you will know by now there has been a fire at the school this evening. I would just like to let everyone know that damage is limited and despite this terrible incident, Holy Child Primary School will be open tomorrow as usual. Should anything change there will be a text sent to parents.

Breakfast club will not be on. All the children should enter the school tomorrow at Central Drive entrance and make their way to the hall for supervision.
