Fivefold increase in seven days in number of COVID-19 patients in NI on ventilators

This time last week there were eight Covid-19 patients in Northern Ireland requiring a ventilator to assist them with their breathing - in just seven days this figure has risen 560 per cent to 45.

There has also been a more than 200 per cent increase in the number of COVID-19 inpatients from 64 to 140 within seven days.

On Monday October 5 there were 12 Covid-19 patients across Northern Ireland in intensive care units - today there are 22 patients in ICU.

The Department of Health (DoH) also reported three additional deaths in the last 24 hours on Monday.

Two of the men died in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area and the other man died in the Fermanagh and Omagh council area.

DoH also reported 877 new infections in the last 24 hours - taking Northern Ireland’s total to 21,035 - of this number 29.2 per cent (6,161) were identified in the last seven days.

These rises come on the same day First Minister, Arlene Foster, deputy First Minister, Michelle O’Neill and Health Minister, Robin Swann joined a virtual telephone call with the British government and the other leaders from the other two devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales.

The Northern Ireland Executive is due to meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss the possible introduction of additional lockdown measures.
