Former school site cleared to make way for housing

Demolition work is well under way at the Immaculate Conception College site.

Waterside Sinn Féin Councillor Christopher Jackson welcomed the works which began earlier this week, almost one year after the school closed its doors .

Colr. Jackson said: “The school has been lying derelict in the heart of our community and recently has become a magnet for anti social behaviour. The demolition is welcome as it was only a matter of time before we had a disaster on our hands.

“This is an exciting development with the provision of the much anticipated social houses. Work has also started on the canteen which will be used as a temporary community centre until a new purpose built centre is on the site.”
