Friday's Child - Seamus Crossan

This week's Friday's Child is Derry man Seamus Crossan who turned the BIG 4-0 on Wednesday. By day Seamus works as a nurse and he is also one of the founder members of Star Running Club which celebrated its first birthday in December. Seamus first took up running when he was inspired by his mother, Ann, who sadly passed away from cancer. This year he has a packed schedule and plans to run the Great North Run and the Walled City Marathon with his buddies from Star. Seamus is doting daddy to John James and Lucie Rose.

How would you describe yourself?

Supportive, Encouraging, Approachable, Motivational, Understanding, Shy. (See what I did there lol).

Happiest childhood memory?

Staying in my granny’s house at the weekends. Getting up early during the summer and going raiding other streets for bonfire stuff.

What was your first job?

Paper boy.

Favourite book?

Credit Union.

Favourite film?

‘Shawshank Redemption’.

Favourite television programme?

Not much of a TV person. Even as a kid all I wanted to do was be outside.

Favourite expression?

Laughter.

Favourite method of relaxation?

That one’s obvious for people that know me.

Favourite holiday destination?

Lanzarote.

Who would you most like to meet?

No one alive comes to mind. If it’s someone that has died would definitely have to my mum.

What makes you angry?

Abuse of the vulnerable.

What makes you happy?

Pay day.

What human quality do you most admire?

Honesty - if you don’t have honesty you don’t have anything.

What human quality do you least admire?

Selfishness.

What has been the most embarrassing thing to happen to you?

When I was at St. Columb’s College we were given an RE essay for homework. Off the top of my head I can’t remember what the title was but remember lifting a bulletin coming out of Mass and low and behold there was the answer to the essay question. I copied it word for word. I felt good that I winged this essay. When I got it back the comment read “A-, This looks familiar, I wrote it” Fr. Martin.

I was sitting on the toilet in a pub and the guy in the next cubicle said “Hi what’s the craic” I replied: “Not much, what about you”, I then heard him say, “I’ll phone you back, the guy in the next cubicle is answering my questions”

What was the worst thing to happen to you in your life?

The death of my mum.

What is your greatest fear?

Losing my kids.

What has been the high point of your life to date?

The birth of my 2 children.

How would you like to be remembered?

That I’ve made a difference to people’s lives both in my professional and personal life.

What is your most treasured possession?

Think that would have to be my runners or my finisher medals

If you won the lotto what would you do with it?

Depends on how much I won. Would definitely share it between my family and set the kids up for life. Take a well deserved break away for a couple of months and re evaluate my life and decide what I’m going to do. I’d still like to be working as a nurse just to keep me busy. If there was much left over I’d invest it into mental health services here in Derry.

If you could be granted one wish in life, what would you ask for?

My health and not to get dementia.

If you could write your own epitaph what would it be?

“That’s one finish line I didn’t want to cross on time”.
