John Deighan was part of the Derry panel, as goalkeeper, who won the National League in 2008.

The 33-year-old father-of-two has been selected by the SDLP to fill the vacancy on Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council after Gerry Mullan was elected to represent East Derry in the Assembly in May.

The new councillor is married, and is involved with the Limavady Wolfhounds GAC.

John, who works for a local recycling firm, said he is looking forward to his work as councillor.

“I’m delighted to have been selected by the party to represent Limavady on Causeway Coast and Glens Council,” he said.

“Over the course of the next few weeks I’ll be listening very carefully to the concerns of local people and working with my council colleagues to support and enhance our local community. I’m very excited about the opportunity to deliver real change for our community.”

East Derry MLA Gerry Mullan wished John well in his new role.

“John will be a wonderful addition to the SDLP team in Causeway. He is a very bright, intelligent, independent young man who will be a tremendous asset to the SDLP team, and I wish him well,” said Mr. Mullan.
