Game of Thrones: Fans flock to Limavady to see '˜Door of Thrones'

The attraction at Frank Owens bar in the County Derry town is the fifth Game of Thrones door, which is part of Tourism Ireland’s 2016 Game of Thrones (GoT) campaign,

The doors have been released once a week to follow the airing of each episode of the hit series, leading to a ‘Door of Thrones’ trail taking followers of the show around Northern Ireland.

Garry Owens of Frank Owens bar said on Tuesday afternoon: “There has been a steady stream of people coming in and, when they see it, they all think the same, that it’s amazing, which it is. There’s a great buzz about and it’s great for the area.”

Garry said even regulars in the bar who don’t watch the show agree the door, wood from two trees at the Dark Hedges – known in Game of Thrones as the Kingsroad – which fell during Storm Gertrude, are bowled over by the door.

“They may not watch the show, but when they see the workmanship, well, it’s out of this world. They think ‘wow’. It has the wow factor,” said Garry.

Best friends Faye Ferguson from Limavady and Rebecca King from Strabane were among the first fans to be snapped beside the intricately carved door.

“I’m so proud. It’s just so great that wee Limavady has been put on the map. Rebecca and I go to all the places where they have filmed and we follow them everywhere,” said Faye.

“I think it’s great for the area. I know there have been loads of people here already. The door is stunning and it’s great to think it’s right here in Limavady.”

Rebecca said while she visits her best friend, Faye, regularly in Limavady she’ll be visiting a lot more frequently to see the door.

“It’s beautiful,” said Rebecca of the door, “and I think lots of fans will be coming to see it. It really is a great boost for the area.”
