Jazz night will benefit Mayor's charity

The countdown is on to the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival, and with 300 gigs taking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to entertainment.

But one event which is always a highlight and the ideal way to kick off the festivities is the Mayor’s Charity event which takes place in DaVincis on 28th April.

The evening is dedicated to the Mayor’s chosen charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, and the proceeds of ticket sales all contribute to the cause. Jazz Festival favourites the ‘Jive Aces’ and Gypsy Swing sensations ‘Manouche Swing’ will be taking to the stage for a show stopping night of the very best music and performance.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, said she was really looking forward to the event.

“The Mayor’s Charity evening is always a brilliant night and I am delighted that the proceeds are going to such a good cause.

“Everyone knows that the fight against Alzheimer’s is a cause that’s particularly important to me and I really want to take this opportunity to praise the work that is being done by the Alzheimer’s Society on a daily basis to help families affected by the condition across the district and beyond.

“I want to encourage everyone to come out and support the event. Most of the entertainment over the course of the weekend is free so people will be enjoying the benefits and can maybe spare that little bit extra which will make such a big difference to the Alzheimer’s Society.”

Anyone who has visited the Jazz Festival before – or watched Britain’s Got Talent – will be familiar with the Jive Aces’ high octane performances and distinctive style. The Aces will have the audience on their feet until late following on from Manouche Swing who have been entertaining audiences up and down the country with their original renderings of classic hits of all genres.

This amazing evening is just a taster of the musical menu for the five day festival which will take over the city’s pubs, clubs, hotels and cafes from 28th April-2nd May, for a celebration of jazz, blues, rock and swing.

Tickets for the Mayor’s Charity event are priced at £7 and can be purchased from DaVincis on (028) 71 279111.

The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is run by Derry City and Strabane District Council, and sponsored by Diageo, Visit Derry, and Tourism Northern Ireland.
