Kids create local landmarks in Lego competition

Derry City & Strabane District Council’s Brick Wonders Competition also involves Lego fans making representations of Lisahally Port, Harland and Wolfe, the Strabane Pedestrian Bridge, and the Turf Man in Magherafelt.

The competition has been organised ahead of the arrival of the forthcoming Brick Wonders exhibition.

Young people and older Lego enthusiasts from across the island of Ireland have been to submit their own Wonder Lego Model and be in with a chance of their creation being included in the Lego Trail.

Over 140 participants took part in the competition, and while the majority of entries were from Derry and Strabane, there were entries from as further afield including Carlow, Belfast and Omagh and a very strong representation from Donegal.

Elsa Edwards, legacy officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council, said all the entries were of a very high standard and judging was going to be difficult.

She said: “We were delighted with the level of interest shown in the competition and at the wealth of talent and imagination that is out there. A lot of creative work has gone into the entries and we are delighted that young people were inspired by their local environment and community to come up with their designs.

“It is great to see iconic places such as the Peace Bridge and the Hands across the Divide being featured.”

Judging for the competition is taking place next week with details of the winners and the Lego Trail expected later in the week.

The Brick Wonders Exhibition is currently exhibiting in Rome and will be arriving in Derry next week for a 12 week exhibit at the Nerve Centre, Magazine Street.

This is the first time Brick Wonders has been in Ireland and the exhibition is expected to be a huge draw for families as well as LEGO enthusiasts, particularly over the mid-term break and Easter holidays.

The exhibition will run from February 6 to May 2, 2016 at the Nerve Centre, and will feature over 70 Lego models and exhibition covers of the Wonders of the World featuring not only the Seven Wonders of the World but a range of ancient, modern and historic exhibits.
