Health Minister Michelle O’Neill revealed a hundred and seventy two legal cases taken by patients of the Derry hospital were settled between 2011/12 and 2015/16.

Last year just £600,000 was paid out to settle 23 cases but in 2013/14 an eye-watering £7.7m was required to settle 44 cases.

Generally, settlements cost the Trust much less.

During the same five years seven legal cases were also settled at Gransha hospital in the city.

In most of these instances no cost was registered as having been incurred by the Western Trust although two cases were settled in 2011/12 at a total cost of £30,000.

And at the Waterside Hospital there were only two such cases. These occurred last year and no awards were made.
