LegenDerry Cannabis club continues legalisation campaign

A Derry club founded to campaign for the legalisation of cannabis and give advice to local consumers distributed '˜pot' paraphernalia during a recent promotional event in the city centre.

Tony McColgan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the LegenDerry Cannabis Club has promised more events will be taking place in the weeks ahead.

The group recently held its first official sticker giveaway to raise awareness of its campaign to legalise medical cannabis in the North.

Members gathered outside a city centre café and handed out stickers with the LegenDerry Cannabis Club logo.

Grinders, skins, tips and cannabis seeds were also distributed, according to Mr McColgan.

But he said the most important thing given away on the afternoon was the information about cannabis itself.

People still believe the myths about cannabis and what I find more shocking is in this the age of information, people still don’t know the truth,” he said.

Mr McColgan contended that there were proven medical benefits deriving from cannabis use.

“Cannabis has been proven to reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, to improve appetite in people suffering with HIV/AIDS and to treat chronic pain and muscle spasms,” he said.

Mr McColgan also claimed that the curative and preventative properties of cannabis are “resoundingly confirmed by hard science.”

“That’s not even touching on the ecological and economic benefits of cannabis,” he said.

Mr McColgan vowed to continue to campaign for the right of people with chronic medical conditions to use the drug. He also said he wanted to encourage more people to grow their own drugs in order to disempower drug-dealers.

“At the LegenDerry Cannabis Club we aim to defend the rights of all humans who use cannabis as a medicine,” said Mr McColgan.

“We are bringing people from different backgrounds together into one community,” he added.

“We wish to promote the ‘grow-your-own’ model so our members can become self reliant in an attempt to take the cannabis market out of the hands of criminals and terrorists,” he concluded.

Mr McColgan said the club will be holding a public information meeting in Amelia’s Lounge, formerly Dodds Bar, on November 16.

He encouraged anyone with an interest in the legalisation of cannabis to attend.
