Light aircraft sustained damage when it bounced after a higher than normal landing speed at City of Derry airport: AAIB

A light aircraft bounced upon landing and sustained minor damage after coming in to City of Derry Airport faster than normal in September, according to a report submitted by a pilot to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

The wing tip, spats and landing gear of the small Van’s RV-7 plane were damaged after the pilot approached the runway at what was described by the pilot as a ‘higher-than-normal’ approach speed.

The incident is reported to have occurred on September 27. Details of the accident were published in the AAIB monthly bulletin for December.It was among nineteen ‘record-only accidents’ which were not subject to field or full correspondence investigations that occurred over September and October.

“The aircraft bounced on landing from a higher-than-normal approach speed. It bounced again and, on the next touchdown, sustained damage to both spats, the right landing gear leg and the left wing tip.

"The pilot carried out a go-around and landed safely,” the AAIB bulletin said.

The agency states that ‘record-only’ investigations are ‘wholly, or largely, based on information provided by the aircraft commander at the time of reporting and in some cases additional information from other sources’.

The organisation advises that because they are subject to review rather than full investigation the ‘accuracy of the information provided cannot be assured’.
