Cathal’s father-in-law, Danny, died from a stage 4 brain tumour and the family are “forever indebted” to Marie Curie for the care they provided to him throughout his illness.

“The secondary reason for partaking in the event is to remember Danny and to keep his spirit alive. The walk is a social event and one of hope and celebration which is marked by the entertainment and firework finale on the night,” said Cathal. “Until Danny took sick I never really knew the work that Marie Curie did. I was like many others, I would have given into a donation box when I seen one. It’s not until you experience first hand they’re work that you really want to give some thing back. I would encourage anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of having the loss of a loved one and had the help of Marie Curie care to get the walking shoes on for Friday 9th September and have a night’s fun and help raise vital funds to keep Marie Curie helping others.”

The walk, in its sixth year, has raised over £500,000. Marie Cure says the money has enabled Marie Curie to continue to deliver its nursing service in the community and at its specialist hospice in based in East Belfast.

In addition to its nursing service, Marie Curie say they have used the money to “develop and deliver innovative services that can help support more people living with a terminal illness”. The services include the Helper Service that offers companionship and emotional support and the creation of a dedicated information and support telephone line (0800 090 2309) that offers useful information about living with a terminal illness and how to access expert nursing care. Registration for Walk Ten is now open. Walkers can sign up at mariecurie.org.uk/walkten or for more information call 028 9088 2060.
