Limavady play park '˜trashed with broken bottles and litter'
A play park in Limavady is being used by late night drinkers who are trashing the place with broken beer bottles and litter, according to local councillor Alan Robinson.
Colr. Robinson expressed frustration at what he called “ongoing late night activity”.
“It is now a frequent occurrence to be made aware that the children’s play park close to Alexander Road has been trashed with broken bottles and litter. It has been sporadic in nature, but the problems appear to have increased lately. Parents are saying that late night activity is leaving the play facility in what is sometimes described as ‘a terrible state’,” he said.
“Yet again, last weekend, I was told the park was strewn with broken beer bottles early in the morning. Local residents have said small groups use the park as a place to consume alcohol on random nights and leave behind them a mess and an added expense for the ratepayer to pick up. The Backburn Path play facility was sited specifically away from residents homes due to concern raised about potential noise.
“Several years ago I had called for play park gates to be closed overnight, however, it was pointed out this would not deter vandalism or prevent someone hurling bottles over the fencing. Until a lasting solution can be found, for the umpteenth time I ask anyone wishing to use the play park as a drinking den they refrain from doing so.”
