The permission was granted after the council negotiated its first section 76 planning agreement alongside developers, Translink, the Education Authority and Transport NI.

Colr. Tierney said that development would provide badly needed homes in an area of housing stress: “The final go ahead for the development of 1500 homes in the Skeoge area is fantastic news for Galliagh and the whole city. This is an area of housing stress where a new build programme is very badly needed. In addition to the provision of new high quality homes for local people, this development will also provide a boost to the local construction industry, bringing much needed jobs.

“The most important thing now is that we see the project move from design to implementation. We need to make this work happen quickly so that a new community, complete with shops and a school, can be built and families can begin to plan for their future.”
