Man was arrested on suspicion of causing death in road tragedy

Police have confirmed that a man was arrested on a number of suspected driving offences including suspicion of causing death by driving carelessly when unfit, following last night's fatal road traffic collision in Derry.

The man was has since been released on police bail.

Earlier this morning police confirmed details of the road traffic collision.

A 70-year-old local man died after being struck by a car shortly before 6.55pm.

It is understood he was a pedestrian who lived in the local area, but his identity has yet to be officially confirmed.

A PSNI spokeswoman said today: “Police can confirm that a 43-year-old man was arrested and questioned in connection with last night’s fatal collision in Derry.

“He was subsequently released on police bail pending further inquiries.”

Police investigating the circumstances of the collision earlier today appealed for witnesses to the collision. The number to call 101.
