Manager's Order prepared on Aghilly road

Councillor Rena Donaghey, chairperson of the Inishowen Municipal District told the ‘Journal’ the road is one of Inishowen’s top prioritised routes for funding.

Following the ‘special meeting’ in Carndonagh, Colr Donaghey, Colr Nicholas Crossan and Colr Jack Murray then met with members of the Residents’ Committee to update them of progress on the road.

The residents were informed that the senior engineer confirmed to the councillors that ‘A Manager’s Order’ has been prepared and forwarded to the county manager for his approval. When this is agreed ‘Notices to Enter’ will be issued to all of the landowners concerned, informing them that the land which is now in the ownership of Donegal County Council, will be entered into to do “necessary work as planned. “ Colr Donaghey said work will then begin on the left hand side of the road going towards Aghilly from Buncrana, which will entail removing some ditches, fences and providing a hard shoulder from the back of Lisowen Court to meet the existing footpath at The Hawthorns housing estate and having additional lights. This work is designed and planned to start in approximately one month’s time.

The news comes ahead of a protest walk to be held on Saturday to call for the almost two million euro funding to put in place to finalise road safety measures and lighting at the location, which has been described as a ‘death trap’ for pedestrians and motorists.

The walk begins at 2pm and the meeting point is at the Co-Op entrance on the Cassie Road. Hi-viz vests will be provided and the organisers are hoping as many people as possible will attend to showe their support.
