The initiative aims to bring back the tradition to Carndonagh, which prides itself on being an ‘historic market town’ with signs declaring as such located on the entrances into it.

It is also hoped that the markets will showcase everything great the town and peninsula has to offer, while attracting customers to Carndonagh.

The Donagh Markets will begin trading at the Diamond from July 4 and everyone is encouraged to go along to see what’s on offer.

They were initially intended to begin in April, but with lockdown, this was delayed.

Deirdre Bradley, Chairperson of the Carndonagh Traders’ Association and owner of Deirdre’s at the Diamond, said they have come at an excellent time and local businesses are delighted to welcome the markets back to the town.

“We think it a fantastic idea, and it will be a huge asset to the town. It will revitalise Carndonagh as a market town, bring more people to the area and it really is the perfect time for it to begin.

“It will also allow people to maybe come into the centre of the town, get a wee takeaway coffee and have a look around the markets and make a day of it. We can’t wait until they get started.”

The markets are a closed event, so any business who wants to take part will have to register to do so.
