Martin McGuinness condemns death threat against Sinn Fein Colr. Sean McGlinchey

Martin McGuinness has condemned a death threat against his Sinn Fein party colleague, councillor Sean McGlinchey.

Colr. McGlinchey said an unknown republican group has issued a death threat against him and said he was made aware of the threat by the PSNI. He said the threat would not deter him in continuing to work for the community and helping people.

“I’ve been told the threat is because of my work with the PSNI regarding the recent bombs in Dungiven and Banagher,” Colr. McGlinchey told the ‘Journal’.

Martin McGuinness MLA said: “The threat against my party colleague councillor Sean McGlinchey is totally and utterly wrong and I absolutely condemn it. It should be lifted immediately. It will not deter Sean or any Sinn Féin representative from representing everyone in the community.”

Colr. McGlinchey said he is “very disappointed” by the threat against him, but vowed to to continue working to create a safer community and helping people.

“I have always respected other republican groups. I do not agree with their military campaigns, and I have consistently called for these groups to engage in talks, but this is disappointing. It’s just very disappointing that this is what republicanism has come to. It’s a sad day.”

A PSNI spokesperson said they do not discuss the security of individuals, “however, if we receive information that a person’s life may be at risk we will inform them accordingly”.
