Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion will ask fellow councillors to support a motion to name the new stand in the newly developed Brandywell Stadium after Derry City F.C.'s all time top goal-scorer, Mark Farren, who passed away recently.

The motion will be submitted on Friday afternoon.

Derry City F.C. legend Mark Farren passed away at the age of 33 last week after battling a brain tumour for the third time.

Mark was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Church, Ballybrack, Greencastle last Friday.

“Following contact with the family of the late Mark Farren and receiving their approval I intend to submit a motion to Council this afternoon recommending that in memory of Mark’s contribution to Derry City Football club and reflecting the widespread opinion in the community that Council should name the new stand in the refurbished Brandywell the Mark Farren Stand,” said Colr. McCallion.

Colr. McCallion described Mark Farren as a “true legend” and a “fantastic role model”.

“Mark Farren was a true legend of Derry City FC and a fantastic role model for young people across the city and region. Everyone associated with soccer across the city and region were devastated by his death at such a young age.

“What better way to ensure that Mark’s sporting ethos and commitment is passed on to the next generation of young footballers than to have a permanent memorial in the form of the Mark Farren Stand in the Brandywell Stadium.

“I once again extend my sincerest and heartfelt condolences to Terri-Louise and the wider Farren and Holmes families at this very sad time. Ar dheas Dé go raibh a anam.”

The new Brandywell Stadium is expected to be completed before the start of the 2017 SSE Airtricity League of Ireland season.
