Minute of silence for '˜beautiful' Rolands

Tributes have been paid to the three-year-old boy from Buncrana tragically killed while visiting his grandparents in Latvia.

Rolands Letins, who attended Cockhill Pre-school, is understood to have died last week in a drowning tragedy.

The little boy’s mother Dace and father Janeks are from Lativa and have lived in Buncrana for a number of years. He is also survived by his older brother, Alex, who is 11-years-old.

On Tuesday, Inishowen’s county councillors observed a minute of silence for little Rolands at their Municipal District meeting.

Councillor Rena Donaghey said people in the area have been left devastated by the tragic news.

“People are devastated. It is so sad. He was a beautiful, lovable wee boy - very bright, very bubbly and we are just absolutely devastated at the sad news. We offer our sincere condolences to his mummy, daddy and his brother.”

She said staff at the preschool were distraught when they heard of last Thursday’s tragedy.

“The teachers are absolutely distraught because they were very fond of him and he had made a lot of wee friends and he was a very popular wee boy and the teachers are brokenhearted. It was an awful shock to hear the news.”

Another spokesperson for the preschool told the ‘Journal’ they were ‘heartbroken’ at the tragic news. They said: “Roland was a delightful little boy and it was a privilege to have him here with us. The management and staff of Cockhill Community Pre-school are heartbroken by this tragic news. We are numbed by it. We have passed on our condolences to Rolands’ parents and family.”
