Move to change name of Roe Valley Arts & Cultural centre in Limavady

The motion, submitted by Councillor Callan, Councillor Douglas and Councillor Wilson, want to change the name to the Alexander Memorial Hall. It will scheduled to be brought before Council on Tuesday.

Councillor Gerry Mullan, who was deeply involved in the development of the Limavady-based centre, said: “The name Alexander is well represented in the preservation of the front façade of the old Alexander Memorial Hall and doesn’t require any further upheaval which is for the express purpose of eliminating any influence of the former Limavady council.

“This crusade spurred on by intense competition between the DUP and Ulster Unionists is wholly at

the expense of the non-unionist population and that is extremely worrying because it indicates that these people have learned nothing from the past and forgotten everything.

“The patience of my party is being solely tested because our six councillors are in this council to develop the things we have in common, promote and encourage inward investment and build a new future which is infinitely better than that which went before but our efforts are being thwarted day and daily by people who have tunnel vision and a notion that the council is nothing more than a vehicle to promote their own narrow agenda.”

The motion submitted by Councillor Callan, Councillor Douglas and Councillor Wilson reads: “That this Council change the name of Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre to the Alexander Memorial Hall with the portrait of S.M. Alexander, which was gifted to the people of Limavady by the Ritter Family, to be restored and put up with an information board in the Alexander Memorial Hall.”
