Mystery of coat of arms found at Limavady dump

DUP Colr. Alan Robinson said he was contacted by a gentleman who spotted the coat of arms at the facility on the Ballyquin Road on Wednesday.

Colr. Robinson said the man wanted to know why it was being dumped, and had suggested it was a Royal coat of arms which may had come from a courthouse, or some sort of government building.

In a bid to shed some light on the situation, Colr. Robinson went to the civic amenity site to see the coat of arms for himself.

“It is a very striking piece, about three and half to four foot high. It was lying against the wall,” said Colr. Robinson.

“From what I was told it came in on a van or lorry and was left off for dumping. Some of the workers pulled it out and there it was - up against the wall.”

Colr. Robinson said while the coat of arms looks very solid it’s actually made of thin plastic. On the back ‘DoE Royal’ is written.

“Was it ripped off a building and stolen; we don’t know,” said Colr. Robinson, “but if anyone knows anything about it, or where it has come from, contact my office on 028 777 69191.”

Colr. Robinson said he had spoken to a Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council officer about the find, and was told the coat of arms would be stored for safekeeping in the meantime.

Colr. Robinson added: “It’s certainly quirky!”
