New CCTV cameras for Derry's quay

Eight new CCTV cameras are to be installed along Derry's riverfront.

The cameras will be placed at various locations between the Bay Road to Queen’s Quay including McFarland Quay.

Members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s planning committee approved the application at Wednesday’s meeting,

The CCTV columns proposed are cabinet base style and are four metres in height. Five of the cameras will be installed at existing columns at various locations along the walkway. One of these cameras will be on an existing street lighting column near Sainsbury’s car park, two on CCTV columns, one near Baronet Street and one between the Derry City and Strabane Council offices and the Council Carpark and three existing street lighting columns along the pathway close to Rock Mills, Boating Club Lane and Lower Clarendon Street.

Two of the new columns are along The Quay Trail adjacent to the land at Fort George and to the North West Regional Science Park.

Gus Hastings of the SDLP welcomed the cameras, which were given planning approval on Wednesday.

“These will be well received because they are important in people’s lives,” he said.
